Dampf Punk Joins the Switchback Lineup

Everybody welcome Dampf Punk to the Switchback fam!

Switchback Brewing Company Dampf Punk

DAMPF PUNK, a hoppy California-style Common started as a one-off experimental batch. This rebel brew quickly became a favorite among our Tap Room regulars and these self-proclaimed Punk fans insisted that we make it available outside the brewery. So here is our unique take on this 100% American beer style.

While still using our house lager yeast, this beer is fermented at a warmer temperature closer to ale yeast conditions, giving it a toasty flavor that is light and crisp. Dry-hopping this beer with a brand new, unnamed hop variety provides soft tropical and herbal notes. The result is wonderfully clean and complex, our unique take on this 100% American beer style.

Look for Dampf Punk at your favorite bars, stores and restaurants...or better yet, ask for it!

Switchback Brewing Co. Releases Combo Packs

Switchback Brewing Co. beers will soon be available in Combo 12-Packs at local stores. The October release of the Combo Pack is the first time Switchback’s iconic stubby bottles will be available in a 12-pack. This exciting addition to the brewery’s offerings required brand new package construction and design. The challenge of efficiently uniting three beer varieties into a single box resulted in a unique packaging process involving equipment modifications and good ol’ fashioned manual labor by Switchback’s employee-owners.

The Combo Pack gives the consumers an opportunity to purchase an assortment of quality Switchback beers at a lower price and allows the rotating special beers to have more availability to the market.

And good things come in Combo Packs!

The first Combo Packs to be released will contain six Switchback Ale, three Citra-Pils Keller Bier, and three Dooley’s Belated Porter in 12oz stubby bottles. Switchback Ale—the number one selling draught beer in Vermont — is a staple for many customers. The Citra-Pils, launched year-round in January, is a clean, refreshing pilsner style lager, dry-hopped with Citra hops, giving it bright lemony citrus notes. Dooley’s Belated Porter exhibits bold, roasted flavors and a smooth finish featuring a single hop variety, Simcoe. The Porter is the first of a few rotating beers to be featured in the Combo Pack, depending on the time of year. Like all Switchback beers, all three varieties are 100% naturally carbonated and left unfiltered.

Switchback Now Available in all New England States

Switchback Brewing Company, Vermont’s first 100% employee-owned brewery, is excited to announce their beers are now available in all New England States. This came to fruition by completing distribution throughout the state of Massachusetts and starting distribution in the state of Connecticut.

Switchback Brewing Company New England

On May 1st Switchback Ale became available in Boston and Cape Cod through a distribution partnership with Horizon Beverage. In addition, Switchback expanded into western and northern Massachusetts with Girardi Distributors of Pittsfield and Athol, completing coverage in the full footprint of Massachusetts. On May 8th Switchback Brewing Co added distribution throughout the western part of Connecticut, in Litchfield, New Haven, and Fairfield counties via partnerships with Star Distributors and A. Gallo & Company. The rollout into the new markets will begin with the flagship Switchback Ale, available on draught as well as the unique 12 oz stubby bottles in package stores.

Additions to the fermentation cellar at Switchback Brewing Co. enable the brewery to keep up with the demand in New England and upstate New York. Switchback Ale is brewed using an original 1964 copper brewhouse from the Brauerei Schmucker in Germany. Like all Switchback beers, Switchback Ale is left unfiltered and 100% naturally carbonated.

Many people in Massachusetts and Connecticut have been insisting for years that Switchback be distributed throughout their states. The brewery is delighted to achieve the goal of becoming readily available in all New England states.

Switchback Brewing Co. Completes Distribution Coverage in Massachusetts

Switchback Brewing Company, Vermont’s first 100% employee-owned brewery, is excited to announce they are completing distribution coverage in the state of Massachusetts, by teaming up with Horizon Beverage in the Boston and Cape Cod region and Girardi Distributors in western and northern parts of the state.

Switchback Brewing Co. beers have been available throughout much of the state over the last few years, starting with Williams Distributing in Western MA, Quality Beverages in Central/Southeastern MA, along with Merrimack Valley Distributing in the North Shore. The response in the state has been overwhelming and the brewery is exhilarated to achieve the goal of complete coverage in the full footprint of Massachusetts.

A new expansion of the fermentation cellar will enable the brewery to keep up with the demand in these new territories. As always, the flagship Switchback Ale is being brewed in an original 1964 copper brewhouse from the Brauerei Schmucker, and left unfiltered and 100% naturally carbonated using a proprietary yeast strain.

Brewer Bites: Slow-Fermented Brown Ale

In 2009, we acquired a “new” four-vessel copper brew house from Germany and began brewing all of our flagship Switchback Ale on this 66 barrel system rather than on our original two-vessel 15 barrel system, allowing us to make significantly more beer at a time and subsequently giving our brewers a whole lot of extra free time. But of course, a brewer’s mind never sits idle, and thoughts immediately turned towards new beers and recipes that we could brew on the old 15 barrel system. It was during this period when we were finally able to brew and release Dooley’s Belated Porter (which had been in the works for nearly 5 years!), and many other thoughts and ideas quickly came and went. Our head brewer, Tony Morse, really likes Genesee Cream Ale, and with the obvious exception of Switchback Ale, it might even be his favorite beer of all time. When he suggested that we brew our own version of a Cream Ale, everyone else laughed, except for him and Switchback’s owner/founder/brewmaster Bill Cherry, who knew that Tony was actually on to something big.

Bill had been wanting to brew and release another malt-forward beer for a while, and he began thinking about the effects of fermenting a malty brown ale at temperatures slightly lower than normal for typical ale fermentation. These conditions would suppress a number of the fruity esters produced by the yeast during fermentation, allowing the flavors of nutty and caramel malts to shine through. Also, when the yeast has to work in these cooler environments, they struggle to break down the sugars and convert them into CO2 and alcohol, but this struggle also produces a smooth, creamy mouthfeel like that of a Cream Ale, and this beer can indeed only be described as “crazy smooth.”

Citra-Pils' New Label: Citra vs. Citrus

We are proud to announce that as of 2017, Citra-Pils Keller Bier and Switchback Ale officially stand side by side as the brewery’s only full-time offerings.

While many may incorrectly call it ‘Citrus-Pils’ there are absolutely zero fruit or citrus flavors added. The citrusy notes are 100% derived from the Citra hop variety used during the brewing process. And it’s not a coincidence that the name ‘Citra’ is so close to ‘citrus,’ as it is known for imparting light and bright citrusy notes such as lemon, grapefruit, and tropical fruit into beer.

So, how do we unlock these flavors and aromas? Through our own unique dry-hopping process, that allows us to pull the citrus notes out of the hops without any overwhelming bitterness. The result is our special twist on this classic pilsener lager. We even designed our new bottle label to highlight these flavors, decorating it with tiny hops alongside citrus slices.

We hope you enjoy drinking Citra-Pils Keller Bier as much as we enjoy making it! Since the very beginning, we have been dedicated to providing you the most authentic and innovative taste experience possible with each glass of Switchback beer. Our first and last thought with every brew is the quality of the product going to our customers.

Look for Citra-Pils Keller Bier on draught, in 22oz and 12oz stubbies at all your favorite bars and restaurants.

2017 Year-Round Release: Citra-Pils Keller Bier

Switchback Brewing Company announces the year-round release of Citra-Pils Keller Bier

BURLINGTON, VT—Switchback Brewing Company is excited to announce the year-round release of Citra-Pils Keller Bier. In the brewery’s 14 year history, Citra-Pils is only the second beer to be produced, bottled, and distributed year-round. The brewery was founded in 2002 around the idea of creating a unique and distinct flavor with the company’s flagship brew, Switchback Ale. The practice of defying style guidelines continues with a long-aged unfiltered lager.

“Citra-Pils hits all of our favorite points,” says Brewmaster Bill Cherry. “We wanted to add depth to the beer market. Citra-Pils adds new dimensions and flavor profiles in the underrepresented category of craft lager beers.”

Citra-Pils was created on a whim in 2014 while maintaining the lager yeast used in the brewery’s Märzen Fest Bier. The lager is brewed in the most traditional way, using only light pils malt and Saaz hops. After a six-week lagering process, the beer is then dry-hopped with a blend that includes Citra hops along with Saaz. The brewers worked with Paul Mueller Company to design a custom hop-handling device, enabling the beer to be dry-hopped without sacrificing Switchback’s signature 100% natural carbonation.

The result is a delightfully refreshing pilsener with a decidedly nontraditional twist. The bright lemony citrus notes of the Citra complement the noble Saaz character perfectly. Like all Switchback beers, Citra-Pils is left unfiltered for the fullest flavor possible.

Bill Cherry reflected on the beer’s taste, “The crispness and clean flavors of a lager combined with a tasteful addition of the Citra hop, normally used in IPAs, creates an unusual and fun combination of flavors.”

Citra-Pils Keller Bier will be distributed in VT, NH, MA, ME, and NY, available on draught as well as in 12oz stubby bottles and 22oz bottles, year-round starting in 2017, with new packaging different than that of Switchback’s Rotating Specials.

What is a Keller Bier?

We are proud to announce that in 2017, Citra-Pils Keller Bier and Switchback Ale will stand side by side as the brewery’s only full-time offerings. Born as a classic pilsner lager, we brew Citra-Pils Keller Bier in the most traditional way, using only Light Pils malt and Saaz hops in the boil. We then dry hop with more Saaz and also Citra hops to create a special “twist” on the classic pilsner style, giving it its bright lemony citrus notes.

But what is a Keller Bier exactly? Keller Biers, typically lagers, are always unfiltered and unpasteurized. In its most literal sense, Keller Bier translates to ‘Cellar Beer,’ a reference to drinking the beer straight from the brewery’s lagering tank. But in a beer world where filtered and force carbonated brews reign supreme, ‘Keller Bier’ stands for so much more. A Keller Bier is truly a Brewmaster’s beer. Fresh from the aging tank. Straight from the fermenter to the glass. Many of you may know that all of our beers, including Citra-Pils, are left unfiltered and are 100% naturally carbonated by the yeast itself, requiring absolutely no force carbonation. We simply move the finished beer from the fermenter to the bright beer tank before packaging, making Switchback Citra-Pils an authentic (or, as our German friends would say, “authentisch”) Keller Bier.

So why should I care? In today’s beer culture, IPA’s and self-proclaimed ‘hop bombs’ are a hot topic and options are plentiful.  Classically brewed lagers on the other hand, not so much, and there is good reason for this. Making a great lager is extremely difficult and demands all the skills of an experienced Brewmaster. It is an unforgiving style in which each and every defect and off-flavor has a crisp and clean stage to present itself. The advantage we have here at our brewery, is the experience, skill and equipment to do this highly respected style justice.

We hope you appreciate our dedication to providing you the most authentic and innovative taste experience possible with each glass of Switchback beer. Our first and last thought with every brew is the quality of the product going to our customers.

Look for Citra-Pils Keller Bier on draught, in 22oz and 12oz stubbies come January at all your favorite bars and restaurants.
